Psychiatric Rehabilitation Continuing Care Unit

Glendenning Avenue is the NHS Dorset's central nine-bedded mental health rehabilitation unit. Service users will normally have a history of severe mental illness and often, despite extensive community interventions, are experiencing repeated relapses and acute admissions.

Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) - Minterne Ward Forston Clinic

Minterne Ward is the psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) for the NHS Dorset. It is an established practice development unit of three years' standing.

The unit has 16 beds, 14 of which are individual rooms. It has been purposely refurbished to meet all the standards set out in Department of Health environmental guidelines and low secure services and benefits from a female only area.

Whitfield Rural Activity Centre

The centre has 20 places a day for people with serious mental health problems. Service users are referred through their care co-ordinator and are on the integrated care programme approach system.

This thriving centre, on the outskirts of Dorchester, is on a purpose-built site and provides structural activities for people with a range of mental health problems. The centre provides a relaxed environment in which people are encouraged to regain their self-confidence, esteem and sense of purpose.

The centre offers a wide range of skills to learn. These include horticulture, animal husbandry, practical wood-working and metalwork. Other creative activities include spinning, hand and machine knitting (using wool from the Whitfield sheep), pottery and other arts and crafts.

Conifers Therapeutic Day Centre

The centre has 12-15 places a day for people with serious mental health problems. Service users are referred through their care co-ordinator and are on the integrated care programme approach system.

The aim of the service is to provide short to medium term intervention for adults to assist their recovery process. This leads on to the care planning for future social, vocational/educational and other occupational needs, involving other appropriate agencies, to obtain a measurable posiitive change in service users who attend the unit.

Waterloo Lodge is a seven bed facility for adult men and women from the North Dorset area (Shaftesbury, Gillingham, Sturminster Newton, Blandford Forum, Sherborne and the surrounding villages). The unit offers treatment for people with short-term mental health problems and during drug and alcohol detoxification.

Getty Gardens

Getty Gardens is a therapeutic day unit serving the North Dorset area (Shaftesbury, Gillingham, Sturminster Newton, Blandford Forum, Sherborne and the surrounding villages).

The unit works in close collaboration with Waterloo Lodge to prevent unnecessary admissions and to enable effective discharge from the inpatient unit.

There are also close links with community-based resources to enable individuals to access social, leisure and employment related facilities. The United Response vocational worker provides help with further education, training and employment.

Assertive Outreach Team

The team provide a service for those deemed difficult to engage within the adult mental health services. It works alongside an assessment service, a continuing care and treatment service and Clozaril team for the statutory services. The team is based within the Weymouth and Portland Community Health Team (CMHT).

Continuing Care Assessment to Treatment (CCATT)

Provide a comprehensive range of evidence-based treatment, medication, care and support to people experiencing psychiatric disorder, and their carers in the Weymouth and Portland locality, who require longer term intervention than that available from Duty Assessment and Response Team. The team is based within the Weymouth and Portland Community Health Team (CMHT).

Duty Assessment and Response Team (DART)

DART is a multidisciplinary sub-team within the Weymouth and Portland Community Health Team (CMHT).

One of the roles of DART is to monitor and account for all referrals coming into the service. All referrals are logged in by DART and either passed towards the appropriate specialist service eg medics, psychology or arrange an initial assessment themselves.

Linden Community Support Unit

Linden is a community mental health unit, providing hospital care for people with various forms of mental health problems. It is a short-stay unit for people of all ages, who suffer with functional disorders or addictions. There are sixteen beds on the unit, all of which are in single rooms.

Occupational Therapy

The occupational therapists (OT) at Linden aim to work with patients, their nurses and doctors to form a complete treatment plan while the patient is in hospital. A wide range of groups and activities is designed to help you with your particular difficulties.
